The proposed landscape was planted with winter blooming flowering plants and perennial flowering plants. Towards the back, evergreen shrubs with flowering shrubs were planted to give depth to the planting bed and to help soften the corner of the building.
The planting bed and the walkway in front had drainage problems due to stormwater from the the corner of roof. During a hard rain the walkway shown here in the middle would often be under a couple inches of stormwater. Something had to be done to alleviate this condition which was causing moisture problems up against the foundation in the corner.
The solution was a french drain system that would allow the stormwater from the roof to be caught in a catchment area hidden by the planting. The french drain system extends through the middle of the planting bed and runs under the walkway to the concrete paver edging seen in the pictures above. Buried under this concrete paver edging is the rest of the french drain system which terminates and daylights out into the yard.
The key in this design was to hide the system, so that the average veiwer would not know that it existed. The results is a satisfactory job of ameding the soils, solving the existing the drainage condition, and beautifying the existing garden area.
